Furniture brand IKEA is moving into the renewable energy market. Starting in Sweden and from September onwards, the company will begin to sell renewable energy.

The affordable, clean electricity will be sourced from wind and solar parks, with customers able to track usage through an app. The initiative marks the latest major step in the company’s larger goals toward climate positivity and reduced greenhouse gases.

The company hasn’t yet announced whether its clean energy sales will be expanded to other countries, but it has been selling solar panels since 2019, in partnership with SVEA solar.

End users will pay a fixed monthly fee along with a variable rate and those that have bought IKEA’s solar panels will be able to track production in the app and sell back surplus electricity.

In order to encourage the construction of new clean energy sites, IKEA will sell renewable energy produced only from solar and wind parks that are five years old or less.
