A £700,000 funding package to support 36 community carbon reduction projects has been approved by Tower Hamlets Council.

The funding will be available for community-based organisations to support renewable energy installation and low-carbon heating technologies, the development of retrofit projects to improve energy efficiency, and for climate education and learning.

This is part of the council’s commitment to becoming a net zero carbon council by 2025 and, in partnership with a climate alliance across the borough, becoming a net zero carbon borough by 2045 or sooner.

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, John Biggs, said:

“We are ambitious in our targets because we know that the climate emergency is a crisis that urgently requires innovation, expertise, and the sharing of knowledge and good practice.

“We want to support our local communities to respond to the climate emergency and fund innovative projects across the borough – this fund aims to do just that, enabling local organisations to innovate and get involved in sustainability.

“As a council, we are taking action on the climate emergency. We have planted 850 trees in our streets, installed hundreds of electric vehicle chargers and cycle hangars for bicycle storage, while also cleaning up the air with School Streets, a programme to help make streets around schools safer and cleaner for children.”

The Carbon Reduction Community Grants programme is due to begin in spring 2022.
