How do you replace the water distribution system in a 100-year-old prominent building? That was the challenge for contractors Capri Mechanical Services who took on replacing and updating the domestic services at the prestigious Strand Palace.
The solution was simple: replace all pipework and utilise Viega press technology to install the systems in a way which protected the hotel and met building requirements.
Dan Heard, Contracts Manager from Capri Mechanical Services, and the team contacted Viega and settled on using Profipress for the copper pipework with Megapress being used on the larger steel risers throughout the building. He says: “It was clear from the beginning that we’d need to use press connections at Strand Palace. We wanted to minimise disruption to the hotel, so speed was key, but with that we needed a system which guaranteed safety for the residents. This isn’t our first high-end installation, and we knew the Viega systems would be up to the challenge. We couldn’t take any risks on this project, so Viega was our first choice.”
From the distribution pipework on the roof through to the risers, Viega systems were used throughout. “It’s just so simple and fast to use, you can quickly get the pipes cut and into position then run through with the Pressgun to seal the system. It’s just so much faster,” says Dan.
Despite the tight spaces and complex pipework, installation was straightforward for the team which allowed them to quickly move onto the most important part of the installation: testing. Dan says: “Given not just the importance of the historical building, but also its position as a luxury hotel, we couldn’t afford any mistakes.” The team needed to guarantee not just a fault-free installation but one that would stand up to the ongoing pressures of everyday use. “Viega’s systems are just so good when it comes to performance. You can pressure test the whole system easily, which makes signing off on the project straightforward. It’s a peace of mind you just don’t get otherwise.”
Designed with SC-Contur integrated in, to allow for a leakage test to be carried out, installers can quickly and efficiently spot unpressed connections. “It’s just so simple, and its error free too – you can’t misalign pipes and the double pressing means the pipe isn’t budging at all.”
