Mixergy‘s ‘heat what you need’ technology and easy maintenance features are helping councils to deliver energy savings to their residents, while decarbonising their housing stock.

Mixergy’s smart water heating technology allows residents to only heat the water that they need. Residents can heat between 10% and 100% of the volume in their tank, saving energy and money by using smart schedules and machine learning. The tanks also have a rapid boost function, so the residents never need run out of hot water. Already, residents are benefitting from this greater level of control with an average saving of more than 40% on water heating.

One of the local authorities working with Mixergy is Birmingham City Council, which has saved its residents up to £50,000 on hot water bills

As part of Birmingham City Council’s retrofit programme, Mixergy tanks have been installed in 126 properties resulting in residents saving hundreds a year on their hot water bills and saving around 80 tonnes of CO2.

Resident Dorothy Burrows forecast to save nearly £500 a year. She said:

We’ve worked out it will be about £500 a year in savings. I’m better off, I can do more, I can spend more money on my grandchildren. It’s the best thing the council has ever done.

Keith Harris, Contract Team Manager for Birmingham City Council, said:

The performance of our initial installations has been remotely monitored and indicated that there will be significant savings in the electricity needed to provide hot water when compared to the cost of running a traditional hot water tank. Birmingham City Council is committed to investigating and implementing new energy saving technology which contributes to a reduction in CO2 emissions and provides measurable benefits for our residents.

In Wales, Barcud Association is saving its residents money on their hot water bills by combining Mixergy’s technology with solar PV on a mixed development of 15 new-build flats and 23 existing homes at William Angie Court in Welshpool.

Graeme Lane, Development and Sustainability lead at Barcud, said:

We can make sure we can have a good service for our tenants. The feedback from residents has been very positive – the amount they’re saving is quite significant.

Mixergy can connect to any energy source, including gas, solar PV, heat pumps or direct electric, meaning councils are futureproofing their housing stock as the UK transitions to net zero.

And as Mixergy is part of Appendix Q, contractors can meet increasing tightening of regulations as it improves EPC ratings.

Martin Allman, Chief Commercial Officer at Mixergy, said:

Now more than ever we are seeing how housing providers are looking to find solutions to meet two key objectives: first, to quickly help residents with rising energy bills; and second, to find cost effective and practical ways to decarbonise housing stock and transition from fossil fuel heating to low and zero carbon alternatives. We see Mixergy as the ‘no regrets’ solution to achieve these objectives.
