Next month elemental is running a three-day digital festival – from 6th to 8th December – looking at some of the challenges facing food & drink businesses looking to decarbonise their buildings.

Energy efficiency in food production – 11am, 6th December

First up on 6th December, we have a session hosted by Rachel England addressing food production facilities and how food and drink manufacturers can make energy-efficiency improvements, while still creating high quality products. The expert panel will talk about the importance of energy-efficient heating and chilling in this sector, and will give practical examples of how production methods can be decarbonised.

Speakers

Ian Bamford, Commercial Director Centre for Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge

Neil Lawson, Non-Executive Director, Low Carbon Farming

Alex Broadley, Industry Vertical Market Lead, Siemens plc

Sustainable supermarkets – how food retailers can get to net zero – 1pm, 7th December

Our second session is on 7th December, in association with Danfoss and hosted by Jim McClelland. It will cover how food retailers can get to net zero. Reducing the energy used by individual shops and stores is one way to tackle this, and our panel will consider ways that grocery retailers can make improvements by cutting the energy demand in their buildings.

Speakers

Paul Marsh, Head of sustainability, WWF-UK

Dr Salvador Acha, Senior Research Fellow, Imperial College London

Graeme Ross, National Key Account Manager – Food Retail, Danfoss

Practical net zero solutions for restaurants – 10am, 8th December

Our final session, on 8th December, will be on energy-efficient restaurants. At the end of 2020, a consortium of the UK’s biggest restaurant chains was created – the Zero Carbon Forum – pledging to decarbonise the hospitality sector and hit net zero by 2040. This session will look at some of the achievements so far, focusing on both buildings and renewable energy.

Speakers

Juliane Caillouette Noble, Managing Director of The Sustainable Restaurants Association

James Taylor CFSP, Head of Sustainability & Environmental Purchasing, The Restaurant Group plc

Sam McCarthy, Head of Sustainability, Nando’s UK & IRE
