Tesla launches solar inverter

Tesla has had solar success with its home battery pack that integrates with residential solar installations (Powerwall) and its solar roof tiles, but couldn’t boast its own solar power inverter, until now.

Solar power inverters are integral to solar installations, enabling the solar energy—generated by solar panels—from DC to AC so that the user’s home and utility grid can use it.

The company says the product has been designed to neatly integrate with the Tesla Powerwall battery as well as the Tesla app, enabling the monitoring of power generation and consumption patterns.

It is not yet clear what the app will be capable of in terms of system integration and optimisation. As a rule of thumb, the more devices that emerge from a single vendor, the easier it is for software to align them to work in symphony and improve system efficiency.

The company describes its latest product from its energy division offering:

“Tesla Solar Inverter completes the Tesla home solar system, converting DC power from solar to AC power for home consumption. Tesla’s renowned expertise in power electronics has been combined with robust safety features and a simple installation process to produce an outstanding solar inverter that is compatible with both Solar Roof and traditional solar panels. Once installed, homeowners use the Tesla app to manage their solar system and monitor energy consumption, resulting in a truly unique ecosystem experience.”
