We’re running three content theatres at next month’s event – here we take a closer look at the Decarbonising Buildings programme, which runs from 21-23 June at InstallerSHOW at the NEC in Birmingham.
Tuesday 21st June
Kicking things off on 21st June, Lord Callanan, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State (Minister for Business, Energy and Corporate Responsibility), starts the day’s sessions with a look at the Government’s Heat and Buildings Strategy and more.
He’ll be followed by Phil Hurley from NIBE Energy Systems UK, who will be highlighting the achievements of a project at the University of West London (UWL), which involved the replacement of old gas boilers with ground source heat pumps and over 580 rooftop solar PVT, making it one of the largest PVT projects in the world.
Social housing retrofit is the topic of our next session, looking at the key role social landlords are playing, and some of the innovative ways they are approaching the challenge. Speakers include Gavin Stokes, Director of Home Energy Solutions, SMS; Rob Cartwright, Director of Energy Solutions and Services, CoreLogic & PEPA and Tom Lipinski, Co-founder and CTO, Q-Bot.
Next up, we have Professor Martin Freer, Director, Birmingham Energy Institute (BEI), who will be presenting the findings of new policy commission that examines all of the components required to deliver a local heat solution and the barriers that need removing.
Our final session on 21st is on local energy generation, and what housing providers and local authorities need to know. The speakers are Ian Allan, Head of Market Strategy, Switch2; Soulla Paphitis, Head of District Energy UK & IE, Danfoss; Iain Carr, Sales Manager, Kensa and Emma Ashcroft, Associate Director, The Carbon Trust.

Wednesday 22nd June
Our first session on 22nd June is a discussion on taking a fabric-first approach to greening our existing buildings. Our speakers are Dr Andrew Smith, Technical Director, ZapCarbon; Samantha Mant, Founder & CEO, Halcyan Water; Steve Lauri, Senior ECO Business Development Manager, E.ON UK and Tom Garrigan, Technical Director at BSRIA and chair of the Net Zero Group at Actuate UK.
Our keynote speech on 22nd will be delivered by environmental campaigner Jonathon Porritt.
Next up, we have a look at how we judge ‘sustainable’ housing. This session will cover some of the ways of approaching sustainability and energy efficiency when it comes to housing, considering both newbuild and existing properties. Plus, the session will give an insight into how social housing providers can access funding for retrofit. The speakers are: Laura Shellard, Head of Sustainability | Assets, Notting Hill Genesis; Dr Hardip Mann, Head of Sustainability, Wates Construction; Marcos Navarro, Director | Green & Sustainable Finance Professional | Sustainability Lead , NatWest and Henry Pelly, Principal Sustainability Consultant, Max Fordham.
The final session on 22nd is Innovation through collaboration – Wates and Lloyds Banking Group. Dr Zainab Dangana, Sustainable Technology Services Manager, Wates Group, and Christopher Houlding, Manager | Engineering, Resilience & Sustainability, Lloyds Banking Group, will discuss how the two organisations have been driving energy-efficient innovation and creating a network of green tech businesses that can reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions and water use.
All sessions on 22nd will be hosted by journalist Fiona Harvey.
Thursday 23rd June
The first session on 23rd is on what we can expect from homes of the future. The panel includes Stuart Fairlie, MD, Elmhurst Energy; Emyr Poole, Manager, Centre of Technical Excellence, Homes England; Dr Neil Watson, Chief Technical Officer, ADEY and Luke Osborne, Energy & Emerging Technologies Solutions Advisor at ECA and member of the Net Zero Group at Actuate UK.
Next up, we have a session on delivery through collaboration – with a look at how the partnership between British Gas/PH Jones and Midland Heart is tackling fuel poverty and supporting the landlord on its road to net zero. Speakers include Ian Mather, BDM – National, PH Jones.
Then we have Ken Hunnisett, Head of Public Sector, Triple Point Heat Networks Investment Management presenting a selection of district heating success stories – projects that have received funding from the Heat Network Investment Project, a £320m fund to accelerate the growth in district heating development.
Our final session of the day is on non-domestic retrofit an the challenges it poses, with speakers Shrikant Sharma, Founder & CEO, SmartViz; Steven Clarke, Key Account Manager, Wates Facilities Management; Ian Roberts, Managing Director, ADEY Commercial and Bill Watts, Senior Partner, Max Fordham.
All sessions on 23rd will be hosted by SustMeme founder Jim McClelland.
