The ADE highlights “underused” forms of heat

The Association for Decentralised Energy (ADE) has shared two new missions it says are crucial for the UK to reach its net zero targets, including decarbonising heat.

The two areas of focus are:

  • Empowering Energy Demand
  • Decarbonising British Heat

In a post on LinkedIn, the ADE stated:

The two missions encapsulate solutions that can provide clean, cheap energy for the UK – we just need the transformational leadership from the government to get us there. The government has used its first few months in power to demonstrate their determination to deliver net zero, however, more is needed.

On the topic of energy demand, it said that more needs to be done on the demand side, to support the government’s plans for electrical capacity:

The government, Ofgem, the CCC and others all recognise that households, businesses and industry should play an active role in a decarbonised electricity system. Now is the time to make this a reality.

We are asking the government to ensure that they are a core part of Clean Energy by 2030, the Review of Electricity Market Arrangements and the establishment of the National Energy System Operator.

And on decarbonising heat, the mission statement highlights the “underused” forms of homegrown heat that can be maximised, such as energy from waste and heat recovery:

Heat decarbonisation is not just key to meeting our legally binding targets, it will support us to a lower cost pathway for energy decarbonisation overall – providing flexibility and thermal storage for the public benefit.

The government needs to act now. It needs to make low carbon heating the economically sensible thing to do and create zones able to attract billions of pounds in infrastructure investment and maximise our homegrown sources of heat.
