The second annual World Ventilation Day has seen a range of initiatives unveiled to draw attention to the importance of ventilation and IAQ to health, comfort and wellbeing, with the theme ‘Breathe better, Live better.’

BESA, the Building Services Engineering Association, posted a series of videos with high-profile ventilation figures describing the importance of air quality and ventilation technology. Experts ranged from UN clean air ambassador Rosamund Adoo Kissi-Debrah to government advisor Professor Cath Noakes. The videos can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/@thebesa2784

Manufacturer Systemair sought to underline the importance of World Ventilation Day by calling on the United Nations to officially recognise the day in its calendar of events. In an open letter, the manufacturers call on the air movement industry to urge the UN’s endorsement: “The UN has a longstanding tradition of designating international days to draw global attention to pressing issues, serving as potent tools for advocacy and uniting people and organisations worldwide to raise awareness and act. The key criteria for UN’s special observances, which include alignment with the UN’s mission of promoting sustainable development and protecting human rights, are met with remarkable clarity by the cause of ventilation.”

At the same time, a coalition of universities has used the day to unveil new guidelines for ensuring better air quality in schools. The CoSchools group, consisting of researchers from the Universities of Cambridge, Surrey, York and Leeds, together with London’s Imperial College and Queen Mary’s, has published a series of tools to help school leaders monitor their indoor air and install appropriate ventilation technology.
